Welcome to Creative Writing Timor-Leste. This site was created to host the zine Writing Around Memory and Place: a collection of poems, stories, and essays by Timorese writers. This publication is the result of a creative writing workshop facilitated by writer Mackenzie E. Smith and English Language Fellow Joanie Andruss. The workshop was hosted at the English Language Center at the National University of Timor-Leste, and the U.S. Embassy in Dili, and funded by the U.S. Embassy in Dili and the President’s Commission on the Standing of Women at Oregon State University.

During the workshop, aspiring Timorese writers learned to draft, craft, and revise their memories and personal experiences into pieces of polished writing. Writing Around Memory and Place was launched at a public reading in March, 2016 at Peace Coffee Timor during which the writers read their work aloud to an audience of friends and family.

We are excited to publish their work and to share their experiences with communities in Timor-Leste, as well as communities online.

Thank you for reading their stories and memories.
